Learning Innovation Work

Learning Innovation Work
Project Based Learning with The Cell-Model Made By Garbage Recycling Into An Effective Learning Media For Science Education.
Abstract
Kistari,S.Pd

Abstract: In the learning topic of “Cells are the smallest unit of the life structure”, students work on the cell-model made from garbage includes organic and non-organic material. Teacher acts as motivator, facilitator, and moderator. The usage of garbage as material for making the model-cell is because those materials are easy to obtain. The aims of this learning innovation are to improve understanding about cell-concept and to implement student-centered learning. The idea of this learning innovation work originated from the results of a survey conducted to 40 students in 7th grade classes SMP Negeri 7 Depok, which 85.5% of them stated that it’s difficult to understand the differences between cell organelles of animals and cell organelles of plants. The reasons of that statement are (1) microscopes which available in the school are not able to observe the cell organelles, and (2) school does not have the cell-model so that students do not interest to learn Science and students became passive. This innovation of project based learning with the cell-model made by garbage recycling was tested on science lesson study in the level of Depok City and was imitated by several science teachers in Depok City. The result suggests that this project-based learning with garbage recycling is effective to make fun in learning, to implement student-centered learning, and to foster student creativity in learning. The cell-model made by garbage recycling can be used as media of learning and helps teachers to explain concept of cell from abstract form into concrete form. This learning innovation was proved in experimental class and suggests that through this learning model in the topic of “Cells are the smallest unit of the life structure”, student performances and achievements improved well.
